Beltane for the Solo Witch

Hey there! Today is May the 1st, May Day, or Beltane. No matter what you call it, today is the midpoint between the Spring Equinox and the Summer Solstice. I'm sure all witches have heard of Beltane at some point, but did you know you're probably mispronouncing it? Similarly to Samhain, Beltane is one of the Gaelic-based words that sound different than an English speaker would read. (I swear, they added random letters to mess with us). Watch Diary of a Ditch Witch on Youtube to explain how to correctly pronounce it and dive into the appropriation surrounding this holiday. It is common knowledge that Gerald Gardener took many festivals from other cultures and changed them into what we now recognize as Wiccan sabbaths. I'm not going to bore your ears off with the long history, and I'm not in a position to speak on its appropriation. If you want more information on Beltane, please search out accredited authors and sources to honor the traditions respectfully.

I've discussed Samhain in previous articles. (You can check them out here.) Where Samhain is all about respecting death and honoring your ancestral line, Beltane celebrates life and fertility. You've survived the winter, and food is no longer scarce. There's no more planning needed because you have planted all of your crops. You are here right now and can finally relax and enjoy yourself. As a solo-practicing witch, I feel slightly left out regarding the holidays. I envy covens and their celebrations as I stare out my window at the weather changes. But have no fear! There are things that you can do that only involve yourself. Even better, you can even do them as a closeted witch.

Eat Deliciously

Live it up now that food is no longer scarce. Indulge yourself in a dinner you usually deprive yourself of: steaks, chocolate fondue, raspberry cheesecake, McDonald's Big Mac (oh yeah, baby). There is something sinfully decadent when you bite into something delicious that is off-limits. How about looking up some foods that are common aphrodisiacs? Try making dinner with one or two and warm yourself up, whether you have a lover or not. Caution: If you have nutritional issues, please eat within your parameters. I'm telling you to eat something delicious, not put yourself in a hospital.

Get acquainted with fire.

After all, this festival is a fire festival, so build a bonfire! Light up the fire pit outdoors, a fireplace indoors, a cast iron cauldron somewhere with excellent ventilation, or just a simple candle. Speaking of candles, this is a great time to try out a new candle spell. Fire is an essential element of life, and we're entering its prime season. So do a little research about the element of fire and learn something new. Even a seasoned witch is constantly in search of new knowledge.

Get Sensual.

As I mentioned above, Beltane is a celebration of life and fertility. Take some time to have a soothing bath and relax those sore muscles. While you're in there, slowly take a few moments to explore your body. Map out all of your exquisite contours and shadows. Put on some cheesy mood music and have a blast. Beltane is the holiday to celebrate your body and all the marvelous things it does for you. Think of it as Valentine's day for yourself. Shower your body with love and a couple of orgasms. You deserve it.

Regardless of how you celebrate, Beltane is an opportunity to connect with nature, honor the cycles of life and death, and embrace the joy of being alive. I hope something has sparked your interest and helped you observe this day to it's fullest. Don't forget to subscribe to my blog for free printables every month!
