How to Make Floral Water
Floral water is precisely what it sounds like: water infused with flowers. When making floral water, your goal is to collect the steam of the water, so you'll need a steamer or a double pot system. You can use fresh flowers or dried ones. One thing to note is that dried flowers need to soak in the water for at least one hour before starting. The most basic recipe for floral water is 5 cups of distilled water and 1/2 cup of flowers. You can choose any flowers you like based on their scent, properties, or attributes.
First, prepare the flowers by removing the petals and washing them thoroughly. If using dried flowers, this is the time to allow them to soak.
Place the water and flower mixture into your steamer or double boiler system. Add a heatproof bowl at the top and flip your lid upside down, so the curve points to your bowl. As the steam rises, it will collect along the lid and drip into your bowl. You can add a bag of ice on top of the lid to make the distilling process faster, but it's unnecessary.
Leave your flowers to simmer for approximately 30 minutes.
Remove the bowl with your fresh floral water and allow it to cool.
Unlike essential oils, you can store floral water in plastic containers. Floral water can last six months when stored in the refrigerator. However, if you start to see any discoloration or changes in odor, please throw it out. It's better to be safe than sorry!
How to Make Florida Water
Florida water is the American version of Eau de Cologne from Cologne, Germany. It was named after the fountain of youth and had a sweet orange base instead of the original lemon. You can learn more about Florida Water's African diaspora origins and appropriation here. Mama Eve on Youtube has a beautiful tutorial if you practice African diaspora traditions and wish to make some.
Ingredients:
Orange Peels
Lemon Peels
Lime Peels
Grapefruit Peels
Palo Santo Stick
Himalayan Salt
Lavender
Sage
Cinnamon Bark
Rose Petals
10 drops Tangerine Essential Oil
10 drops Sage Essential Oil
10 drops Rosemary Essential Oil
Alcohol (She uses 100% Rubbing Alchohol)
Directions:
Add all your ingredients to a glass jar until it is 3/4 full. Then fill the remainder with alcohol. Seal with the lid and place in a sunny spot. Allow the mixture to steep for one entire moon phase (ex. new moon to new moon). For each stage of the moon, shake the mix and ensure all of the herbs are still covered by the alcohol. Once a month has passed, strain your jar to remove all solid items. And that's it! Now you have your own Florida Water.
How to Make Holy Water
Please be sure you are of the Abrahamic faith to use holy water. Holy Water is NOT the same as blessed water (moon water for witches) or sacred water (from temples of other faiths). Holy water is specifically a water of the Abrahamic faith. As with all things, it is powerless if you do not believe in the god behind the blessing. Holy water is traditionally consecrated by a priest and is available in Catholic churches. If you are not of the Catholic faith or have trouble accessing a catholic church, you can make it at home using Catholic prayers and rituals.
First, begin by consecrating the salt. Be sure to use pure salts such as rock salt, sea salt, or kosher salt. Pour the salt into a small bowl or container and say the following phrase from the Roman Ritual:
"O salt, creature of God, I exorcise you by the living God, by the true God, by the holy God, by the God who ordered you to be poured into the water by Eliseo the Prophet so that its life-giving powers might be restored. I exorcise you so that you may become a means of salvation for believers, that you may bring health of soul and body to all who make use of you, arid that you may put to flight and drive away from the places where you are sprinkled every apparition, villainy, and turn of devilish deceit, and every unclean spirit, adjured by Him Who will come to judge the living and the dead and the world by fire. Amen.
Let us pray.
Almighty and everlasting God, we humbly implore Thee, in Thy immeasurable kindness and love, to bless + and sanctify + this salt which Thou did create and give over to the use of mankind, so that it may become a source of health for the minds and bodies of all who make use of it, and may rid whatever it touches or sprinkles of all uncleanness and protect it from every assault of evil spirits. Through our Lord, Jesus Christ, Thy Son, Who lives and reigns with Thee in the unity of the Holy Spirit, God, for ever and ever. R. Amen."
Next, gather your water. Try to get clean water from a natural source and filter it. Distilled bottled water works if no pristine rivers or streams are near you. To exercise the water, repeat the following words from the Roman Ritual:
"O water, creature of God, I exorcise you in the name of God the Father almighty, and in the name of Jesus Christ His Son, our Lord, and in the power of the Holy Spirit. I exorcise you so that you may put to flight all the power of the Enemy, and be able to root out and supplant that Enemy with his apostate angels: through the power of our Lord Jesus Christ, Who will come to judge the living and the dead and the world by fire. Amen.
O God, Who for the salvation of mankind has built Thy greatest mysteries on this substance, water, in Thy kindness hear our prayers and pour down the power of Thy blessing + into this element, made ready for many kinds of purifications. May this, Thy creature, become an agent of divine grace in the service of Thy mysteries, to drive away evil spirits and dispel sickness, so that every-thing in the homes and other buildings of the faithful that is sprinkled with this water may be rid of all uncleanness and freed from every harm. Let no breath of infection, no disease-bearing air, remain in these places. May the wiles of the lurking Enemy prove of no avail. Let whatever might menace the safety and peace of those who live here be put to flight by the sprinkling of this water, so that the healthfulness, obtained by calling upon Thy holy name, may be made secure against all attack. Through our Lord Jesus Christ, Thy Son, Who lives and reigns with Thee in the unity of the Holy Spirit, God, for ever and ever."
Finally, with the salt and water blessed, you may begin combining the two. Be sure to add the salt in the shape of a cross while repeating:
"May this salt and water be mixed together; in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen. The Lord be with you. God, source of irresistible might and king of an invincible realm, the ever-glorious conqueror; who restrain the force of the adversary, silencing the uproar of his rage, and valiantly subduing his wickedness; in awe and humility we beg you, Lord, to regard with favor this creature thing of salt and water, to let the light of your kindness shine upon it, and to hallow it with the dew of your mercy; so that wherever it is sprinkled and your holy name is invoked, every assault of the unclean spirit may be baffled, and all dread of the serpent's venom be cast out. To us who entreat your mercy grant that the Holy Spirit may be with us wherever we may be; through Christ our Lord. Amen.”
How to Make Moon Water
Moon water is one of the most accessible and valuable types of water. When you create your moon water, the position of the moon will determine the unique properties that it inherits. Water resting under a full moon will be filled with the most considerable power from the moon, used for beauty, prosperity, abundance, purification, and warding magic. Water under the new moon is darker in its aspect. Great for banishing, invisibility, cursing, hexing, letting go, and worshiping the dark goddesses.
To create your moon water, choose which phase of the moon best suits your purposes. Next, fill a container with water (preferably rainwater or purified water). Wait until the moon is out and the sun is entirely hidden before putting your water out. You can leave your water uncovered, but I prefer to put a lid on mine to keep bugs or debris out. The moon will charge it either way. Next, allow your water to sit in the moon's rays overnight. This can be outside or inside on a window sill. The water will charge if it is in the moon's glow. Bring the water back in before the sun's rays hit the container. Lastly, label your jar with the moon phase in which the water was charged.
How to Make Rust Water
Also known as war water, rust water is a powerful tool for protection, hexing, and curse reversal. This type of water is more of a malevolent variety, so please use caution. The most common way to use rust water is to splash it on the door or step of your target's home. However, a witch can also add rust water to a protection spell to rebound any curses sent their way.
To make rust water:
Place iron nails or other rusted iron into a jar of thunderstorm water, adding enough water to cover the nails.
Place the jar in a cool area, and leave it undisturbed for seven to ten days.
Open the jar periodically and stir as needed.
Some use this jar indefinitely, similar to a sourdough starter. Discard the entire jar and contents if you notice mold or bacteria growth.
How to Make Snow Water
The veil is thin in the dark half of the year, making winter the perfect time for introspection and shadow work. With winter being a metaphor for death and the renewal of life, witches can also use snow collected during this time for ancestral work and purification. Snow can be gathered day or night but is most potent when collected under a full moon. Put a container outside in a location where it has a low chance of being disturbed. Once the jar is full, bring it inside and allow it to melt on your altar. You can use the melted snow's purification properties to cleanse your altar and tools. Tea rituals can also receive a boost if you use clean melted snow that has been blessed under the moon.
How to Make Storm Water
Witches and magic users of all ages have harnessed the tumultuous power of stormwater. Commonly used in hexing, cursing, and banishment spells, stormwater is easily made by setting a container out in a storm to collect the water. Be sure to place your container away from your roofline. Runoff water from roofs contains pollution and is not pure. Once brought back indoors, strain the water with a coffee filter or cheesecloth to remove any debris that may have fallen in. Then, cover the water, store it, and use it as needed.
::caution: Due to high pollution levels, some cities have laws against collecting rainwater for your safety. Please check with your local authorities to be sure you are allowed.
How to Make Sun Water
Sun Water is made similarly to moon water but in reverse. It requires charging in the warm rays of the sun. To decide if you need sun water or moon water, consider what you plan to use it for. The sun has a different energy than the moon and can bring other effects. For example, the sun is masculine and exudes bold fire energy, but the moon is tranquil and emotional. I would use sun water in a spell for creativity and confidence, but moon water would be best for introspection or cleansing. If you believe in astrology, check which sign the sun is currently in if you plan to consume sun water. For example, sun water made with Sagittarius might make you curious and itching to go outside. In contrast, a Virgo sun water might make you more critical than before.
