Last night's Samhain was a very simple affair. (Thanks a lot, Covid!) I wasn't able to get out and grab things at the store like I normally would. I had to make do with what we had at home and I think it worked out very well.
What I placed on my Samhain Altar
Front to Back
Mug of Mulled Cider
One of my favorite cold-weather beverages. The smell of cider cooking in a slow cooker all day is mouth-watering. This is a treat for my ancestors as well as me.
Pomegranates
The OG of Samhain offerings. Originally an underworld fruit of Egyptians, most people now associate it with the myth of Hades and Persephone.
Bowl of Pomegranate seeds
I had so many pomegranates that I emptied a couple of seeds into a bowl for even more of a presence on my altar.
Incense
I used simple bulk incense cones with the fragrance of pine. Pine is heavily used in Scotland and Ireland and that is where the majority of my ancestors hail from.
Jar of Bean Skins
As a hedge witch, I find purpose in all of nature's bounty. I love the changing of the seasons and seeing birds slowly spread their wings or trees shedding their leaves. I also find it fascinating that beans have to lose their shells to be properly digested by my body. The shells that are left behind remind me to shed everything that harms me and only keep what nourishes me. I placed them into a jar I made that has an Egyptian beatle on the top signifying death and rebirth.
Yoga Witch figurine
Goddess energy is not always young or motherly. I love celebrating goddess energy in all her forms. This little witch came from Michael's years ago and she still makes me smile every time I look at her.
Amethyst
Amethyst is one of the higher crystals that resonate with the third eye and is often used to help ascend your mind to other realms. It's this crossing of realms that always makes me think of the afterlife. Be sure to keep your mind open when using amethyst because one can usually recieve clearer messages.
Scrying Mirror
With the veil at its thinnest, Samhain is the perfect time for divination of all kinds. I only use my scrying mirror on this night because I'm really horrible at it. I need that extra push to get any messages.
Green Man Candelabra
I made this candelabra back in March and it's my most prized possession. I've never had anything on my altar before to represent male energy and this one is just perfect for me.
White Candles
Since I was unable to leave the house for the past two weeks, I had to use what candles I had lying around the house. Lucky for me, white candles can be substituted for any color so it worked out fine.
Red Rose
While most people would never associate red roses with Samhain, my entire family actually ties red roses with funerals. When someone dies in my family, the casket spray (the bouquet that sits directly on top of the casket) is always made with red roses. It's so synonymous with funerals that giving anyone in my family red roses is akin to a death threat. My mother once threw away an entire bouquet a beau had given her. (In her defense, she had adequately warned him).
Gourds
And last, but not least - gourds. Can't be Samhain without a pumpkin! lol
