Introduction to The Fool Tarot Card
What better way to start the year (and the tarot deck) than a young man setting out on his adventure? Some believe that the major arcana is structured in a way that tells the adventures of The Fool. Therefore, The Fool is often numbered 0 but can also be placed at the end of the major arcana. A common iconography of The Fool showcases mountains in the background to hint at challenges and obstacles. The Fool understands that challenges are on the horizon, but he doesn't care about them right now. He is so focused on the future that he fails to notice that he's about to step off the edge of a cliff.
The Fool Upright
The Fool is a leap of faith. Standing on the edge of a cliff, The Fool encourages you to throw caution to the wind and embrace the unknown even when you don't feel quite ready. This card is about adventure, excitement, and personal growth. If you struggle with self-doubt, meditate on The Fool's energy. He's daring, carefree, and playful. The Fool is often linked with the energy of the trickster, The Green Man.
The Fool Reversed
Conversely, The Fool Reversed can show that you are taking too many risks and acting recklessly. As pictured on the card, The Fool is not watching where he's going and could easily plummet to his death. When reversed, the universe tells you to take a step back and carefully think about the repercussions of your actions. Or perhaps you're ready for that change, but you've stalled and felt yourself become stuck.
