Tarot- #1 - The Magician

Updated: Jun 18

UPRIGHT: Creation, Power, Manifestation

REVERSED: Greed, Trickery, Manipulation

Introduction to The Magician Tarot Card

The Magician is card #1 in the tarot, the number of power and creation. He stands at a table with all four tools in front of him: a cup, pentacle, sword, and wand – representing the four elements – earth, air, fire, and water. This display symbolizes that he has all the tools of creation at his fingertips and is ready to create anything he wants.

The infinity symbol above his head shows his limitless capabilities and the flowers surrounding him show his dreams coming to fruition. One hand reaches towards the heavens while the other points down, showcasing his position as a link between the spiritual and material domains.

His face is one of passiveness. He is focused and committed to his goals, but he is relaxed. This expression shows that he has such power and mastery that his work comes easily and naturally.

The Magician Upright

The universe tells you to move forward when the Magician appears in a tarot reading. Whatever plan or dream you envision, the Magician is here to help you manifest them into reality. You have the spiritual, physical, mental, and emotional resources to materialize your desires.

When upright, the Magician's highest hand directs energy down from the heavens and the spiritual plane to the earth and the material plane. This higher energy is reflected in your decision and course of action. What you're doing is good and comes from a place of higher enlightenment. Also, be sure to use all the tools available on the table before you (love, logic, finances, and power). Don't be frugal here!

The Magician Reversed

Mercury's trickster energy is in play when the Magician card is reversed. His energy is now flowing in the opposite direction, originating from the material world. This change in polarities symbolizes that plans are being manifested from a place of ego in search of power or money. The Magician has become a street performer, using his magic tricks to distract the crowd so he can con them out of money. You need to ignore the flashing lights and instead focus on the reason for your desires. Are you aligning with your best self? Or are you trying to make a quick buck to keep up with the Joneses?
