UPRIGHT: Intuition, subconscious mind, divine feminine
REVERSED: Secrets, ignoring intuition
The High Priestess's Description
The High Priestess tarot card is feminine to its very core. Some scholars believe the tarot only has three main characters: The Fool, The Magician, and The High Priestess. All the cards are believed to represent these three spirits in various forms. When you look at the female cards in the Major Arcana, they all exhibit inner knowledge and the subconscious mind in some fashion.
On the left is a dark column inscribed with a B that represents Boaz, who is very firm and strict. Think of him as the embodiment of 'NO.' A white column has a J on the right side of the card. This J represents Jachin, the passive embodiment of 'YES.' In the center of the card, the High Priestess sits on the threshold of the conscious and subconscious mind, representing duality. Even her tarot number (2) expresses her dual nature.
In her lap, the High Priestess holds a book of knowledge ready to bestow upon the viewer. The crescent moon at the bottom of the card and in her crown symbolizes her connection with the divine feminine, her intuition and subconscious mind, and the moon's cycles.
The High Priestess Upright
Since the High Priestess is the purest feminine card, drawing this card could reference a strong woman or someone with strong intuitive powers. Feel free to seek the strong council of a strong female. As mentioned, the High Priestess sits with a book of knowledge, but it is facing inwards, away from the viewer, and towards the Priestess's gut. This signifies trusting your intuition and your 'gut' feelings. You may need to remove yourself from others and travel inward to seek your answers.
The High Priestess Reversed
The High Priestess reversed indicates self-doubt. You have the answers within you, but you aren't trusting your gut instincts. Instead, you find yourself seeking outside validation. This card showing up in a reading can also mean that the viewer is facing a complex problem but is expecting a simple black-or-white answer. Take a step back and reassess your current situation. Try looking at the duality of the problem and listen to your gut.
