Tarot #9 - The Hermit

Updated: Jun 18

UPRIGHT: Introspection, Meditation, Solitude, Wisdom

REVERSED: Alienated, Isolation, Loneliness

The Hermit Tarot Card Description

(Description based on the original Smith-Waite tarot card)

The Hermit stands alone atop a mountain, symbolizing spiritual mastery and growth. His path of self-discovery has led him to heightened awareness. Holding a lantern with the Seal of Solomon, a symbol of wisdom and divine protection, in his right hand, he is guided forward, though the darkness of the lamp only illuminates a few steps at a time. This lack of foresight suggests that focusing on the present is more important than trying to map out the future. In his left hand, he holds a staff, representing his power and authority, which aids in his guidance and balance. Some scholars believe the Hermit's staff is the Magician's wand in its mature form. Both his cloak and his down-turned face are representative of going inward and blocking the outside world.

The Hermit Tarot Card Upright

The Hermit Tarot card, when upright, suggests a phase of deep introspection and meditation. It signals a time for self-reflection, urging you to step back from the hustle and bustle of daily life and contemplate your values and direction. For instance, it could mean taking a weekend off to go on a solo retreat or spending a few minutes each day in quiet contemplation. With its depiction of a solitary figure holding a lantern, this card may also indicate a need to withdraw temporarily to recover from challenges or seek guidance from a counselor or therapist. The lantern symbolizes the inner light of wisdom and guidance that a person can only find through introspection and solitude.

In matters of the heart, the Hermit symbolizes healing after heartache and preparing for a fresh start. It can also hint at a period of celibacy. In established relationships, it may represent a mature partner or a call to reconnect and prioritize quality time together. At work, the Hermit warns against overworking or material gains at the expense of personal fulfillment. It may signal a need for a career change driven by a search for deeper satisfaction. However, it's important to note that the card does not predict a career change but rather suggests that you consider this possibility. Financially, it advises a prudent and mature approach to money matters and investments, indicating that your financial decisions should be guided by a long-term perspective and a focus on stability rather than instant gratification.

The Hermit Tarot card, even when reversed, holds the promise of spiritual growth. It cautions against burnout and encourages self-care. Taking breaks and practicing mindfulness can prevent health issues from arising due to overexertion. In line with the Hermit's theme of spiritual journeys, this card urges engagement in spiritual practices like meditation or shadow work. Embracing solitude can lead to profound spiritual growth and inner guidance, enriching your journey, even in the face of challenges.

The Hermit Tarot Card Reversed

When The Hermit Tarot card appears reversed, it's a gentle reminder that balance is key. While self-reflection is crucial, this card cautions against excessive solitude. If you find yourself isolating, you might miss out on important social connections or personal growth opportunities. It's a nudge to re-engage with the world and the people around you. While introspection is valuable, finding balance and moving forward is vital. This card also hints at shyness or hesitancy in social situations or avoiding self-reflection out of fear. The Hermit encourages participation in group activities to enhance spiritual growth and connection with others, emphasizing the importance of finding a balance that suits you.

In relationships, a reversed Hermit signals loneliness. In a relationship, it may indicate feeling disconnected or overlooked by your partner due to busy schedules. For singles, it could signify a fear of missing out on love or feeling overlooked. It may also suggest a desire to reconcile with an ex-partner after a breakup. If the Hermit card shows up in reverse within a career spread, there's a good chance that you've been working in solitude, but now it's time to network and collaborate. Seeking guidance from experienced individuals regarding financial decisions is advisable.
